I am a Scottish photographer, currently based in Southern Thailand and Scotland. My background is as a marine biologist and professional diver. This is something reflected in my photography; the diversity of the natural world, especially the sea, is a core element of many of my images. That said, I also love images of people, and the stories that can be told with a single image.
I started out in the days of film photography. In fact my first 'proper' camera was a mechanical underwater 35mm film camera, a Nikonos III. No LCD screen, batteries, no lightmeter, but a wonderful tool for forcing one to learn how light behaves and how, through a few simple controls, one can paint with light to create beautiful images. Nowadays I work with modern digital cameras alongside traditional film-based analogue cameras. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses, although I have great fondness for the magic that happens when light hits silver halide crystals embedded within film.
