When printing on canvas you would usually need to include additional canvas around the edges of your printed image that will be stretched over the wooden stretcher bars. This is basically what would end up showing on the sides of your stretched canvas and there is typically 4 main options to choose from:

  1. You just leave the canvas raw.
  2. You apply a full colour such as white or black [you can basically choose anything].
  3. Gallery wrap, where you extend the image onto the sides.
  4. Mirror wrap, where you mirror the image onto the sides.

Its really personal preference on which option you prefer but many of our clients tend to opt for a gallery or mirror wrap.

In this article we are going to show you a quick solution for creating the mirror wrap edges using a great script for Photoshop created by Techelworks [download links and instructions available in the article]. Naturally if you are printing on canvas with us, we are happy to prepare your file according to your requirements.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1

Download the script from here: https://www.teckelworks.com/2016/01/canvas-gallery-wrap-script-version-2/ and save somewhere convenient on your computer for later access.

Step 2

Open the image in Photoshop that you intend to add mirrored edges to. In our example below the image is sized 40 x 32 inches.

Step 3

Go to file -> scripts -> browse and find the script folder you just downloaded.

Opening the scripts function in Photoshop

You’ll then want to double click on the script called GalleryWrap.jsx which will load the prompt box in Photoshop.

Step 4

You can play around with the various options to get a sense of how they effect the output in Photoshop, but for the simplicity of this article we literally just want to apply 2 inches of mirrored edges to the image.

To do this we implement the below settings in the dialogue box and press OK.

The script will immediately run and apply the required 2 inches of mirrored edges around your image. You can check again the image size information and you’ll note that the size has increased to 44 x 36 inches, correctly applying 2″ to each of the 4 sides.
