Many organisations and individuals have old photographs or pieces of memorabilia that have suffered from the passage of time and/or various environmental issues. These photographs may be suffering from mould, discolouration, colour loss, insect damage, and various other problems. Whilst the originals themselves may be beyond repair its often possible to rescue, digitize, and create new versions of the damaged originals.
Even if your photographs aren’t looking to bad now, if you do work for a company that likes to maintain old photographs of venues, events, key personnel etc, then you may want to consider digitising these originals sooner rather than later if you know that the company doesn’t have the originals in digital format.
In a recent job we undertook for an established monastery in Singapore we were tasked with photographing, restoring, printing, and framing a number of old images of former masters. These particular photographs were very old and showing classic signs of deterioration.
For 4 of the past masters the client wanted to maintain the original essence of the photographs but bring them into a consistent look and feel without looking to “new”. As the original works were in such bad condition we decided to photograph them without removing them from the frames. This allowed us to capture high resolution images and then digitally restore, print, and frame.
Below is some examples of the before and after.
